I am a stage manager based in Santa Barbara, CA. My experience as a production stage manager is primarily in straight plays, from Lillian, a one-woman show on a single set, to Barlow’s A Christmas Carol with five actors, three dances, nine songs and 255 cues. This April I completed my first musical as production stage manager, Jesus Christ Superstar. My experience calling dance shows and ability to read sheet music made the transition from straight plays to musicals feel like I had years of experience under my belt.
I enjoy the logistical puzzles of running deck as an ASM as much as I enjoy calling a show. I’ve worked as an ASM on both straight plays and musicals, for which I have tackled fun challenges like pre-setting three tables of precisely placed foley instruments (It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play), rigging and operating three explosions (Sleuth), and tracking, making and serving seven consumable liquids between 34 glasses (Emma: The Musical). Director Jenny Sullivan calls me “the hardest working ASM in the business.”
This year I added opera stage management to my skill set. In the winter I was an ASM on Opera Santa Barbara’s Il Trovatore, and in the spring I stage managed an opera showcase with the University of California at Santa Barbara Department of Music, which included a new piece by Joao Oliveira, scenes from Gluck’s Orphée et Euridice, the Act IV Finale from Le Nozze di Figaro and the Act I Finale from Così fan tutte. This past summer I worked as an ASM for the Music Academy of the West’s Summer Festival, which included an opera scenes program, Carmen and L’enfant et les Sortileges.
